Chronic Pain Treatment Program

Chronic Pain Treatment

At Bayside Marin we offer a unique treatment option for clients who suffer from chronic pain and dependence on medications. Our Chronic Pain program is individualized and comprehensive and is designed to help individuals achieve some relief from this very challenging set of circumstances.

Millions of people unfortunately suffer from Chronic Pain. Their lives are controlled by their pain and the medications they take to manage the pain. Often times the pain medication becomes as much as a problem as the pain itself and it's difficult for the individual to know what to do. Chronic pain frequently results in the individual becoming hopelessly dependent on the pain medication to the degree that they are unable to determine if they are medicating their pain or their dependency. Sometimes as their tolerance increases they find themselves shopping for additional doctors, forging their own prescriptions, buying drugs from the Internet, and even turning to street drugs.

Next Steps:

Another problem arises when individuals, in an attempt to avoid becoming addicted to their medication, decide to endure the pain and resist taking pain medications as prescribed. This is especially true for Recovering Substance Abusers since pain medication is such a big cause of relapse. However, it is important to note that untreated pain is just as much as a relapse trigger as abusing pain medication. Learning how to manage both the pain and the pain medication is necessary to achieve Recovery.

The more one knows about the causes, prevention and treatment of pain, and the positive and negative effects of pain medication, the better the chances of developing an effective Recovery Program. In order to have any success dealing with the myriad of issues related to treating Chronic Pain, it is essential that a capable and experienced treatment team guides the process.

Philosophy

We believe that a person suffering from Prolonged Pain Complex Syndrome can be treated successfully so these individuals can enjoy a life that is not dominated by pain.

By the time individuals reach Bayside Marin they often feel like it is the last stop and hope for recovery. They are often discouraged by the confusing medical care they have received and unfortunately are often addicted to their prescription medications.

Often these individuals will have undergone multiple surgeries and/or invasive procedures that have resulted in adding another many layers to the already complicated pain complex.
It is not unusual for such individuals to suffer from a stress disorder as a result of these multiple invasive procedures.

It is also not unusual that these same individuals feel disempowered and unable to effectively advocate for their medical care.

They come to Bayside Marin with a complete separation of their minds, spirits and bodies. It is our goal to guide them through a process here that will allow integration of these three entities and return them to a satisfying level of functioning.

To that end we offer a unique program here at Baysidemarin designed to:

  1. Create an atmosphere of validation, hope and healing
    for each individual.
  2. Quiet the individual’s neuromuscular system and reduce the physical pain.
  3. Assess and treat the impact of prolonged pain complex on the body’s soft tissue system.
  4. Train individuals in non-medication pain management strategies.
  5. Guide individuals to learn and understand the relationship between stress, anxiety, fear and pain.
  6. Educate individuals in good self-care and lifestyle strategies designed specifically for pain reduction and healthy living.
  7. Educate families so they more fully understand the impact of these complex pain conditions on their loved ones.

Implementation

  1. Evaluation by a team of practitioners experienced in treating individuals suffering from prolonged pain complex conditions.

  4. Weekly re-assessment and adjustment of the treatment program.
  5. Education and training in pain management, life skill development and self-care.
  6. Development of an individualized self-care program to follow upon discharge from Bayside Marin

Requirements

  1. Residents must meet the following criteria for admission to the pain program:
    • Be able to walk around the property and negotiate stairs. We cannot accommodate individuals in a wheelchair or those missing a limb.
    • Have a diagnosis and history of pain disorder. We do not diagnose the causes of pain, we only treat it.
    • There is a physiological and/or psychological dependence on pain medications (and possibly other substances). We are primarily a chemical dependency treatment facility and the program is designed to treat addiction.
  2. Residents must arrive with current medical and diagnostic reports. MRI and X-ray reports are appreciated.
  3. Residents must agree to complete the 30 day addiction program once their pain levels have become manageable and their functional capacity has increased to tolerate that level of activity.

Due to the complexity of the Chronic Pain treatment you should expect to be in treatment for 45 to 60 days.
