Whether it is to alcohol, heroin, meth, cocaine, painkillers, or some other drug, an addiction to substances can quickly wreak havoc on a person’s life. Depending on the substance that is being abused and the longevity of the abuse itself, successfully overcoming an addiction can come with a great deal of difficulty. For many substances, such as alcohol and opioids, painful and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms can emerge in the event an individual attempts to end his or her substance abuse without assistance. Additionally, the psychological dependence that can occur when a person is caught in the grips of an addiction can also create a lot of undue stress for an individual when the emotional turmoil that is caused by substance abuse is not handled appropriately.
Successfully combating an addiction requires a person to commit to his or her recovery and rely on others, namely professionals, to assist him or her in effectively healing from this type of concern. By seeking treatment, those who wish to overcome an addiction to substances stand the greatest chance at reclaiming their lives.

Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Substance Abuse Treatment
When a loved one is battling an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol, the adversity that ensues can impact not just the addict, but close friends and family members as well. In many cases, this type of problem can cause friends and family members to feel powerless when trying to determine what they can do to help the person they care for in achieving a sober life. However, before giving up hope, there are things that you, a concerned friend or family member, can do to assist your loved one in getting treatment:
- Have an open conversation with your loved one about his or her addiction. Discuss your fears, worries, and hopes that you have for his or her future.
- Convey the need for treatment and inform your loved one that you will be supportive.
- Research treatment rehab options with your loved one and help him or her determine which center will be able to meet his or her needs.
- Advise your loved one to contact his or her center of choice so that he or she can learn all that he or she can about the recovery process.
- Even if your loved one does not request it, offer to go with him or her to any scheduled tours or assessments for treatment.
- Consult with your loved one’s treatment providers to learn how you can be helpful during this difficult time.
Lastly, it is a good idea to seek your own support while your loved one is in treatment. Whether it is your own counseling services or attending support groups, it is a good idea to take care of yourself while your loved one works to improve him or herself.
Why Consider Drug & Alcohol Treatment at our Rehab Center in California
The effects of an addiction can be far-reaching and affect every area of an individual’s life. Aside from the monumental health risks that are known to occur when a person abuses drugs and/or alcohol, several other consequences are likely to happen. Many individuals who are battling an addiction are unable to perform well in a work setting and lose their jobs as a result. With job loss, financial difficulties are known to arise and can become worse if much of the person’s income becomes dedicated to supporting a substance abuse problem. Conflict with loved ones, sometimes resulting in violence or emotionally aggressive outbursts, may also occur and could lead to the deterioration of meaningful relationships or divorce. Mental health condition symptoms could also worsen over time and result in the onset of self-harming behaviors, suicidal ideations, and even attempts at suicide if treatment is not sought. Because of the compounding effects that arise when a person is abusing or addicted to substances, seeking treatment is a life-saving decision that can significantly reduce the likelihood of the aforementioned adversities.

Additionally, we are steadfast in helping our clients set attainable goals while in treatment and for the future so as to instill the belief that a history of abuse and mental illness do not have to be barriers for achieving personal ambitions. When clients partake in our state-of-the-art residential program, the following therapeutic approaches can be woven into their personalized treatment plans:
Medical detoxification: A long-standing addiction to certain drugs and/or alcohol will likely lead to physical dependence. When clients come to Bayside Marin for treatment, yet require assistance in overcoming withdrawal after developing a dependence upon substances, medical detoxification services will be implemented into their treatment plans and will take place prior to engaging in our residential programming. Medical staff are on hand 24/7 to monitor the health of each client receiving detox and, when necessary, will utilize certain medications in order to make this process as comfortable and painless as possible.
Medication management: When an individual is battling a mental health condition at the same time as an addiction to substances, the use of certain medications may be incorporated into his or her treatment plan while at Bayside Marin. The recommendation for medication management services will be based on the needs of each client and meetings with a psychiatrist will occur each week to monitor how clients respond to any medications prescribed. Our caring nurses are also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist in monitoring each client’s progress while taking medication(s).
Individual therapy: One-to-one sessions with a mental health professional can be a time for clients to process their thoughts, feelings, emotions, and triumphs while at Bayside Marin. These sessions take place twice per week or more if it is deemed necessary for a client’s progress.
Couples and family therapy: Available on an as-needed basis, Bayside Marin offers couples and family therapy sessions. These sessions are conducted by each client’s primary therapist and can be a time to improve communication and foster a greater sense of support between clients and their loved ones.
Group therapy: A core component to the care offered at Bayside Marin is group counseling. Each client will partake in group therapy sessions at least three times per day, of which feature the following topics:
- Substance abuse education
- Dietary counseling
- Family education
- Continuing care planning
- Treatment planning
- Discharge planning
Experiential therapy: True holistic treatment & rehab involves the inclusion of experiential therapies. Bayside Marin’s care includes these therapies as a way to help clients realize the connection between their minds, bodies, and spirits. Offered once per week, the following experiential therapies are featured at Bayside Marin’s Treatment Center:
- Massage therapy
- Art therapy
- Therapeutic gardening
Family program: Bayside Marin is proud to offer a program for the family members and loved ones of the clients we treat. This program, which features psychoeducational opportunities, occurs two times per month and assists those closest to our clients in understanding their roles during the recovery process. This specialized program also helps family members and loved ones in establishing their own networks of support and provides a forum to relate and bond with others who have endured similar struggles.
Continuing Care and Levels of Drug & Alcohol Treatment
At Bayside Marin, we are dedicated to making sure that our clients remain successful in their addiction recovery process long after receiving treatment at our center. To us, this dedication lies in the thorough discharge planning we do and the continuing care options that we offer to our clients and their loved ones.
During the first few days at our substance abuse treatment center, our continuing care coordinators meet with clients to begin the process of preparing for discharge. These staff members will also periodically meet with clients during treatment to check in on their progress in order to determine what each client’s needs will be upon leaving Bayside Marin. Detailed discharge packets are created with the input from our clients, and our continuing care coordinators will put forth their best efforts to ensure that the most appropriate referrals are made. Additionally, if any follow-up appointments are needed, these same staff members will schedule them so as to make the discharge process as streamlined and as simple as possible.
Bayside Marin also offers each client and their loved ones 12 months of free continuing care once a client completes his or her treatment. A recovery coach is assigned to each client upon graduating from our residential care and will work with clients and family members to ensure that they are receiving ample support and the resources needed to continue the positive progress made while at Bayside Marin. Any and all services recommended are based on the needs of clients and their loved ones, and each person involved in this after care program is encouraged to adhere to treatment recommendations and update the recovery coach on new concerns so as to prevent relapse and other hindrances in the recovery process.
Yet another facet of continuing care offered by Bayside Marin is the Recovery and Renewal service. This service is for alumni to return to Bayside Marin to rejuvenate the skills needed to help them remain successful in their recovery journeys. Former clients can spend a few days in the program’s milieu and, once again, leave Bayside Marin with the confidence required to remain steadfast on the road towards a healthier lifestyle.
