Helping a loved one get treatment for borderline personality disorder
If you have a family member or loved one who is suffering from borderline personality disorder, you may be feeling an array of different emotions. You are likely confused by your loved one’s behaviors and while you know that he or she needs help, you may be unsure as to what role you can play in his or her recovery. If, in addition to struggling with symptoms of borderline personality disorder, your loved one is engaging in the abuse of drugs and/or alcohol, you may also be extremely concerned about what the future holds for him or her if he or she does not put an end to such destructive behaviors. While caring for someone who has borderline personality disorder can be difficult, there are things that you can do that can serve as a guide as you learn how to best help and support your loved one.
- Take the time to become fully educated on borderline personality disorder. As a result of the dramatic and rapid fluctuations of mood that plague individuals who are struggling with this condition, it can be very difficult to understand where your loved one is coming from and what he or she is experiencing. By learning about the disorder, it can assist you in developing a sense empathy towards your loved one and the turmoil that he or she faces each day.
- Accept and come to terms with the fact that your loved one is suffering from an illness and that he or she may not be in complete control of his or her behaviors. Recognizing this will help you understand that, contrary to how it may seem at times, your loved one is not intentionally doing things to hurt or frustrate you.
- Try to remain patient and nonjudgmental. Encourage family involvement and seek out support from other people in your loved one’s life.
- Research options for treatment that specialize in providing services for individuals who are battling the compounding concerns of borderline personality disorder and a co-occurring substance abuse problem. Present your findings to your loved one and offer to accompany him or her to any appointments for evaluations or tours of treatment centers that are scheduled.
- Once your loved one has become engaged in treatment, ask for recommendations from his or her treatment provider as to how you can best be of assistance and support to your loved one, both while he or she is in treatment and once treatment has ended.
Why consider treatment for BPD at Bayside Marin Treatment Center in California
The presence of borderline personality disorder will inevitably take control over every aspect of an individual’s life. This condition affects how people feel about themselves, how they see themselves, how they view others, how they relate to others, how they react to certain situations, and how they handle their day-to-day lives. Their unstable self-image, fluctuating moods, and impulsive behaviors may result in frequent changes in employment or an overall occupational failure, subsequently resulting in the onset of financial strife. Additionally, people with borderline personality disorder frequently struggle with disturbances within important relationships, alterations in their goals for the future, as well consistently changing values and perceptions. These ups and downs can wreak havoc on the mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing of an individual, ultimately causing them further distress. Furthermore, borderline personality disorder also frequently elicits suicidal ideation and the onset of self-harming behaviors, of which can cause even more devastation in a person’s life. If substance abuse is an additional factor in a person’s life, the physical consequences can be devastating. By engaging in treatment, however, these detriments can be managed, overcome, or prevented altogether.
